The finest wines in the world are still made in wooden wine barrels and for a very good reason. Why? Wooden Wine Barrels The wine undergoes a very special controlled oxidation that takes place through the wooden wall of a wine barrel. The wine picks up a distinct oak taste from the barrel and the combination of the two processes gives the wine a flavor impossible to achieve through any other means. While oak chips and innerstaves (strips of new oak that are placed in old barrels or in stainless steel containers) give oak flavor and some aroma to the wine, only a new or nearly new oak barrel can give the wine that very special oak character that we have come to enjoy in the very finest wines. We stock American oak barrels made in the United States in sizes from 1 gallon through 30. These barrels come with a medium toast - where the wood on the inside of the barrel is toasted over an open flame before the head of the barrel is installed. The barrels have galvanized metal bands and one hole in the middle of the long sloped side of the barrel. These barrels are marked "SCP" on the head of the barrel which stands for Sap Clear Plain and refers to the condition of the oak wood used in making the barrel. We stock American Oak barrels We stock American oak barrels made in the United States in sizes from 1 gallon through 30. We also stock wax lined American Oak barrels in one to five gallon sizes. These barrels are marked "PP" on the head of the barrel and are primarily used as vinegar barrels and for other uses where the oak flavor and controlled oxidation is not required. These barrels are listed in our price list as wax lined and are less expensive than the "SCP" type of American Oak barrel. Additional Information  We stock smaller sizes of French and Hungarian oak barrels in sizes from 5 liters to 100 liters. Please call for availability and current prices. Wooden barrels are also available by special order in 55 and 60 gallon sizes made from French or American oak. The smaller American oak barrels are available by special order in "SCC" (Sap Clear Charred) which refers to a barrel with much darker toast on the inside of the barrel than "SCP" barrel or in a decorative barrel not suitable for wine making at lower prices. When ordering wooden wine barrels please confirm both price and availability at the time of ordering because we find it difficult to keep all sizes of barrels in stock due to their limited availability from the manufacturer.
